During the workshop I was able to meet several other authors that were there to learn with me, many of which I am going to stay in touch with. At first I did feel a little out of place because most of them were children’s authors and right now I am new adult/adult, but the workshop was for everyone. Plus, I was from the south and pretty much everyone else was from PA/NY or NJ. We all also ate very well. Snacks and drinks (including ice-cream with toppings) was available around the clock and meals served to us buffet-style; hot, fresh and delicious. My favorite was probably the lunch on the last day- German potato salad with large green beans mixed in…yum!
Most of us stayed in little cabins while there. They were cozy and private while being walking distance from everything—perfect. The word garden was great too. Putting authors in in a word garden is like putting children in a playground, lol. Many of us enjoyed that.
I hope to make a trip to the Highlights Foundation an annual visit. I wish I could go back now, but being in North Carolina makes that a little hard. I definitely recommend all writers/illustrators to go see for yourself. You will not be disappointed. I sure wasn’t!
